Sweet Dreams Heat Therapy Pillow

Here's a sneak-peek at one of the new handmade products I've been working on for my soon-to-be-launched etsy shop. I'd like to introduce you to the Soothing Peppermint Moist Heat Therapy pillow. This one measures 6.5" x 13" which fits well against a tense neck, across a crampy tummy or over an achey shoulder or elbow. It's made from upcycled fabrics; in this case, a genty-used but apparently unwanted bed pillow. Inside this toile and damask bag (which has a velcro closure at one end) is a separate muslin bag filled with long grain rice infused with peppermint essential oil. Just pop it in the microwave for a couple of minutes and voila; warm refreshingly-scented comfort! I made one of these for my good friend Mary Beth as a Christmas gift. She called me a few days later to tell me how much she loved it and asked me to make a larger one for her. I'm also working on a softer flannel version for kids to snuggle with on chilly nights and one for pets. I need to do a little aromatherapy homework, but so far I'm thinking I'll offer peppermint, lavender and lemongrass.

I'd love to have some feedback from my readers. What size would work well for your heat therapy needs? What scent would you prefer? Having your input helps me make a better product. I look forward to reading your comments. Thanks so much!

*Yikes* Just realized I hadn't added a link to where I got the pattern/tutorial from. Thanks SewMamaSew, for all the amazing sewing ideas and info you share, not to mention your awesome fabric store. You rock!

  1. i just bought one of these for our new puppy! when i need to replace it, i know where to go now. we also have a longer one for us humans. it measures 27" long and 8.5" wide. it's not overly stuffed, making it perfect for wrapping from shoulder to shoulder, across the neck. i LOVE these pillows! as far as scent goes, i'm a no scent kinda gal but i think the mints, menthols, and lavendars are the most theraputic. i am excited to see your etsy shop when you launch!

  3. LOVE this. Wonderful fabric, and peppermint sounds loverly. I would agree with the comment above about a longer one, perhaps, to make for easier wrapping?

  4. Fun stuff Leslie! Peppermint sounds devine...we've seen all the herb ones (not that there is anything wrong with lavender pillows....pepermint just sounds more uplifting & relaxing - like a cup of pepermint tea would!)
Size-wise - yes, a longer one would be nice. Your one above is very pretty - would make a fabulous gift!

  5. What a wonderful idea Leslie! Love the toile fabric. My favorite scent would be lavender. As far as size, the one you have listed above is perfect. Maybe you can offer another size as well, slightly larger, and see which one sells best. Can't wait for the launch of your new Etsy shop. How exciting!

  6. Yeah for launching your Etsy store! Thanks for visiting my site...I do love some lavender but peppermint is definitly my favorite! My heat therapy need is my lower back, so I imagine a larger square would be good!

  8. Thanks to all of you for your great comments! I hope to be finishing up the larger version this weekend. Still no word on launch-date for the etsy shop; with house hunting, an upcoming move and all the snow shoveling here, life has been a little wacky!

  9. I made these for Christmas a couple years ago and my family loved them. I made several different scents.
    • Lavender

    • Cinnamon
